The heart of this school is the people, young and old, who are associated to us one way or another: our community, which includes our scholars and their parents, our teachers, the local support staff and our alumni. We are, first and foremost, a coeducational boarding school with day students in Togo The influence of this school, though, reaches far and wide: our young people and their families, and their teachers, come together as representatives from five continents. This school has great responsibility towards the wider community and to the environment around us. It is important that we feel the weight of our social obligations; many local people now employed by the school rely upon us. We will need the active support of many around us as we aim, through this development plan, to raise our roll to 450. The school will still be small enough to remain familyfocused, but big enough to offer a generous range of subjects to our senior scholars, our IB Diploma candidates. We must shine powerfully as a beacon of education in West Africa and further. Our energy must be focused on improving the learning experiences of our children and young adults but we should also be aware of our role and responsibilities to ensure that our community is a developing community of lifelong learners, an ideal that we should champion. Curriculum at The British School of Lomé is defined broadly, with our boarders in mind. It is all that happens to our boarders and dayers while they are under our care – from their early rise, until they are asleep at night, seven days a week. There should be no hidden curriculum. Our young people reside with us for 35 weeks of the year, and very often do not go back into the arms of their parents. We have duties to ensure that life – skills are taught and that important knowledge is imparted. If these duties are likely to cause offence through cultural or religious differences, we should identify and publish the issues and include this information in the admission process. Social programmes should be linked seamlessly between school and boarding life.
