St. Petersburg, the former capital city of the Russian Empire for over 200 years, has always been a cultural and educational centre. One of the most beautiful cities in the world, St. Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great on the Gulf of Finland in the Neva delta in 1703. The citys unique history is reflected in its 18th19th century avenues, palaces and parks. The streets of the Northern capital are a wonderful combination of different architectural styles. Our city is sometimes called a symphony in stone. The islands, rivers, canals and bridges make it especially charming. In June and July, a great number of people come to the embankments of the Neva River to enjoy a spectacular view of the bridges being drawn to let the sea ships through. The beautiful parks and palaces of St. Petersburg suburbs Pushkin, Pavlovsk, Gatchina, Peterhof, Lomonosov, and the old part of Kronstadt were included into the UNESCO world heritage list.
